Transportation Systems Analysis (TSA) Group

The Transportation Systems Analyst performs research and analysis on a variety of projects focused on transportation systems planning, policy, and engineering related to vehicle communications, intelligent transportation systems, connected and automated vehicles, freight movement, and economic impacts of transportation systems.  Position reports directly to Richard Wallace, Group Director.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Conduct research and prepare reports
  • Analyze data and interpret results
  • Collect, organize, and maintain data and other relevant information (electronic and otherwise)
  • Provide abstracts and analyses of research material gathered via library and Internet searches
  • Research and analyze transportation (and possibly other) policy issues
  • Contribute to the writing and production of research reports
  • Gather information related to possible funding sources and assist with preparation of proposals
  • Participate in project and research meetings
  • Collaborate effectively with other researchers within and outside CAR

General Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree in urban planning, civil engineering, or other appropriate field (will consider those with a terminal B.S. in one of these fields and five or more years of relevant experience)
  • Three or more years of experience in transportation systems research or equivalent planning or engineering practice
  • Working knowledge of U.S. automotive industry
  • Familiarity and experience with collecting data from government and other databases, including Internet sources
  • Familiarity with the operations of federal, state, and local transportation agencies
  • Strong knowledge of intelligent transportation systems, including connected and automated vehicle technology
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including presentation abilities
  • Proven ability to execute tasks and analyses and meet strict project deadlines
  • Proven ability to write reports and present research findings
  • Mastery of Microsoft Office software tools
  • Demonstrated high level of initiative
  • Ability to work well with a team of researchers

Desired Qualifications:

  • Previous experience with federal- and state-funded projects
  • Experience evaluating funding sources and writing proposals
  • Familiarity with transportation systems models and modeling, GIS, and use of GPS data
